Los \u00e1caros de la sarna est\u00e1n en su mayor\u00eda d\u00e9bilmente esclerotizados, se mueven con lentitud, son muy peque\u00f1os (100\u2013900 \u03bcm) y viven permanentemente en sus hospedadores.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Hay que recordar que los ancestros de las gallinas son los dinosaurios, y una parte de este vestigio que les ha quedado son las escamas de las patas; el \u00e1caro vive y parasita continuamente debajo de las escamas.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Se esconde en las capas epid\u00e9rmicas de la piel de las patas de los pollos, pavos y faisanes, causando una sarna costrosa conocida como pata escamosa. Si no se trata, puede acabar en cojera y distorsi\u00f3n o p\u00e9rdida distal.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Las hembras miden 350\u2013450 \u03bcm de largo y los machos, menos de 240 \u03bcm. Como en el caso de otros knemidoc\u00f3pticos, las patas de los machos son m\u00e1s largas que las de las hembras y todas ellas terminan en una peque\u00f1a ventosa dotada de un ped\u00fanculo largo.<\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Neo Cnemidocoptes<\/i><em>\u00a0gallinae<\/em><\/span> puede infestar la piel de la espalda, la cabeza, el cuello, el abdomen y la parte superior de las patas de los pollos, gansos y faisanes, causando un prurito intenso. Las plumas de esas zonas pueden caerse, romperse o ser arrancadas por el hospedador, provocando un estado conocido como el \u201cprurito del desplume\u201d.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Todas las secreciones, restos de posturas, mudas, suciedad que produce el \u00e1caro, m\u00e1s las escamas muertas, son las que forman estas costras; por supuesto, todo este conglomerado es portador de bacterias, y al ave le produce prurito (picaz\u00f3n), que la misma ave intenta quitar, produci\u00e9ndose heridas.<\/p><p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Knemidocoptes mutans<\/em><\/span>: Cuando la infestaci\u00f3n es leve, apenas se muestran s\u00edntomas especiales, pero cuando el mal se agrava, aparece una deformaci\u00f3n escamosa de las patas, con aspecto blanquecino y esponjoso.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Las escamas pierden su aspecto cerrado y brillante y se produce la secreci\u00f3n de trasudados profundos que forman co\u00e1gulos y costras.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Por eso se le debe lavar con agua templada para ablandar las costras, cepillar con un cepillo de u\u00f1as o de dientes suavemente y no retirar las escamas muertas; se le caer\u00e1n y repondr\u00e1, desinfectar con un producto a base de yodo y utilizar el producto que le aconsejen los veterinarios o expertos en avicultura.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Despu\u00e9s de seco, le daremos una buena capa de vaselina; es una opci\u00f3n preventiva en procesos normales, y esto lo utilizamos todos los avicultores en Europa, d\u00e1ndonos muy buenos resultados; es cubrir las patas con vaselina.<\/p><p align=\"justify\">Con esto matas al \u00e1caro <em>Knemidocoptes mutans<\/em>, porque le dejas sin aire y lo asfixias;
