Muchos consumidores optan ahora por los huevos org\u00e1nicos, certificados como \u201clibres de jaulas\u201d, es decir, pollos en patios urbanos; causa furor, pero por lo general estos cuestan entre dos y tres veces m\u00e1s que los comunes, y tampoco es f\u00e1cil encontrarlos en todos los supermercados.<\/p><p>\u00bfLa alternativa? Criar sus propias gallinas. Por ejemplo, el Proyecto de Huertos Comunitarios de Oakhurst (OCGP, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) realiz\u00f3 su cuarto Simposio de Pollitos en la Ciudad en Decatur, tambi\u00e9n en Georgia. Unos 50 participantes se dieron cita en talleres a lo largo de un d\u00eda entero.<\/p><p>El prop\u00f3sito de estos encuentros anuales es ense\u00f1ar a los habitantes urbanos los conceptos b\u00e1sicos para criar pollos en sus patios traseros, en un pa\u00eds donde, salvo el caso de las grandes metr\u00f3polis, proliferan ciudades con reducidos cascos centrales y extensos barrios y suburbios residenciales de viviendas unifamiliares.<\/p><p>Las clases versan sobre temas como la naturaleza simbi\u00f3tica de los pollos, las distintas variedades, la construcci\u00f3n de gallineros y las medidas contra predadores, con qu\u00e9 alimentar a sus aves, c\u00f3mo criarlas, primeros auxilios y nociones de salud en general, y c\u00f3mo instalar corrales comunitarios.<\/p><p>OCGP imparte todo el a\u00f1o el curso \u201cLos pollos son f\u00e1ciles\u201d. A menudo los cupos se agotan. Aunque no hay una organizaci\u00f3n nacional que re\u00fana a los criadores urbanos de pollos, muchas comunidades han recurrido a herramientas de Internet para apoyar sus emprendimientos av\u00edcolas.<\/p><p>Andy Schneider, un portavoz nacional del movimiento que promueve la cr\u00eda urbana y que es conocido como \u201cEl susurrador de pollos\u201d, inici\u00f3 en 2008 en Meetup el grupo sobre cr\u00eda en patios traseros de Atlanta, que ya tiene unos 1.700 miembros.<\/p><p>Otras ciudades que experimentan un auge en la cr\u00eda de pollos son Austin, Chicago, Nueva York, Portland y San Francisco, seg\u00fan Schneider. Austin y Dallas, ambas en el sure\u00f1o estado de Texas.<\/p><p>Ofrecen recorridos por gallineros, en los que la gente viaja especialmente para ver c\u00f3mo cr\u00edan aves, otras personas, seg\u00fan el coordinador del programa en OCGP, Andrea Zoppo.<\/p><p>Por su parte, Schneider tiene un programa diario de radio que se transmite por Internet de 12:00 a 14:00 horas, y que versa en su totalidad sobre sostenibilidad y avicultura en patios traseros.<\/p><p>Tambi\u00e9n act\u00faa como portavoz nacional del Programa de Bioseguridad para Aves del Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos. Y en septiembre de 2011 present\u00f3 el libro \u201cThe Chicken Whisperer\u2019s Guide to Keeping Chickens\u201d (Gu\u00eda del susurrador de pollos para la cr\u00eda de pollos).<\/p><p>Ya aqu\u00ed, en Europa, se hace desde hace mucho tiempo; est\u00e1 integrado en los habitantes y cultura de los pa\u00edses, y m\u00e1s en los de origen mediterr\u00e1neo; ese es el caso de Espa\u00f1a.<\/p><p>Pues siempre hay un gallinero en las zonas rurales, tanto de gallinas de puesta y gallos o capones de engorde para carne, es decir, autosuficientes de huevos y carne de estas aves.\u00a0<\/p><p>Hoy en d\u00eda, ya se ven en los patios urbanos de los adosados o parcelas de 500 metros en las nuevas construcciones de las urbanizaciones en las ciudades, en las que se est\u00e1 aprovechando su peque\u00f1a parcela trasera de verde, con un peque\u00f1o gallinero de dos o tres aves, que surten a la familia de este estupendo alimento.<\/p><p>Lo interesante ser\u00eda proponer y hacer efectivo para esos ciudadanos urbanitas, como es el caso de las personas mayores (jubilados) que no pueden poner en su vivienda unas gallinas.<\/p><p>Procurarles un terreno del ayuntamiento, para poder poner un gallinero comunitario, ser\u00eda ideal, ya que estar\u00edan ocupados con todo lo que lleva el cuidado y atenci\u00f3n de las gallinas, y a cambio ellas les dar\u00e1n unos
