Klebsiella in chickens: bacterial infection and treatment

Bacterial Diseases:

Klebsiella pneumoniae

What is klebsiella infection?

La klebsielosis es una infección producida por gérmenes the genus Klebsiella. Cause of opportunistic infections. The genus was named in honor of Edwin Klebs, a microbiologist German of the late NINETEENTH century, and is found in nature or is part of the colon.

The bacillus, now known as Klebsiella pneumoniaealso it was described by Karl Friedländer, and for many years was known as the bacillus of Friedländer.

They are Gram-negative bacteria; lactose assimilation and fermentation can be observed on MacConkey agar, where the colonies are pink in color, and on Klinger or TSI medium, where they are acid/acid, meaning they ferment lactose and produce gas, and they are positive in the acetone fermentation test or Voges-Proskauer test.

It is an infectious disease affecting young chicks. Chicks infected with Klebsiella exhibit lethargy, weakness, drooping wings, fever, ruffled feathers, prostration, and loss of appetite.

Some chicks experience severe thirst, accompanied by severe diarrhea. Some birds may recover, but most do not survive.

When the chicks are born infected, presenting symptoms the same as or similar to the omphalitis.

The application of certain antibiotics in the drinking water can effectively resolve the infection.

The prevention of Klebsiella infections should be based on strict disinfection of the incubators and monitoring of the newly hatched chicks.
